- A viral Touramic travel video is challenging the widespread belief that Kenya is a warm, sun-soaked country all year round
- The countdown reveals five Kenyan locations where temperatures regularly plunge to single digits, with one spot hitting minus three degrees Celsius
- Mount Elgon, the Aberdares and the Mount Kenya region are among the freezing destinations that most Kenyans have never considered visiting in a warm coat
Kenya tends to conjure images of scorching savannahs, blazing sunsets and warm coastal breezes, yet a new travel video is upending that picture entirely by revealing the country's most bitterly cold corners.
A video published by Touramic on Facebook on September 24 counts down five Kenyan locations where the cold is not just a morning chill but a genuine, biting freeze. Shot across highland roads, dense forests and mountain moorlands using drone and moving-vehicle footage, the clip is drawing wide attention because it reframes a country most people associate with warmth.
Where Kenya Gets Dangerously Cold
The countdown begins at number five with Mount Elgon, where mornings in the Chepcatel highlands can sink to four degrees Celsius. Thick forests, open moorlands and hidden caves make it a compelling destination for high-altitude adventurers, though cold winds make warm layers essential.
Fourth on the list are Eldoret and Iten, two towns better known for producing world-class distance runners. Temperatures here regularly dip to six degrees Celsius, with dense fog blanketing the landscape on many mornings. Third place belongs to Timboroa, described in the video as one of the coldest permanently inhabited towns in the country. Sitting at nearly 3,000 metres above sea level, it regularly records temperatures below five degrees Celsius.
The Aberdares
The Aberdares take second place, covering a stretch from Nyandarua to Kinangop. Frost, icy mornings and temperatures as low as two degrees Celsius are common across this highland region, where fog drifts across open fields and the forests remain cold throughout the year.
Mount Kenya Tops the List
The undisputed coldest environment in Kenya, according to Touramic, is the Mount Kenya region. Areas including Naro Moru, Sirimon and the surrounding moorlands regularly touch zero degrees Celsius, and on some occasions temperatures fall to minus three degrees Celsius.
"Mount Kenya is not only our highest mountain, it's also the coldest environment you can explore in the entire country," the narration states.
The video ends with an open invitation for viewers to name their most surprising entry from the list and to suggest locations for future coverage.
