- Video of the heartfelt encounter quickly went viral, drawing widespread attention to Okot's milestone career in American basketball
- The footage captured a warm embrace and a joyful group photo in a packed WNBA arena on September 24
Madina Okot, the Kenyan basketball player turning heads in the WNBA with Atlanta, had a moment to remember on September 24 when President William Ruto showed up courtside to cheer her on.
Video footage from the arena captured a deeply personal scene: Okot, wearing number 11 and still in her playing kit, sharing a warm, lingering embrace with an older woman before the group gathered for a joyful photo with Ruto, dressed in a blue suit, beaming alongside them.
The mood in the footage was less of a formal state appearance and more of a family reunion, with the crowded arena humming in the background as the group shared what appeared to be a genuinely celebratory moment.
Madina Okot's Journey to the WNBA
For Kenya, Okot's presence in the WNBA represents a significant milestone. The league is widely regarded as the highest level of professional women's basketball in the world, and Kenyan players reaching it remain a rarity. Her appearance on an Atlanta roster, competing at that level, has made her a figure of national pride back home.
Ruto's courtside visit added considerable weight to that pride. A sitting head of state travelling to watch one of his country's athletes compete abroad sent an unmistakable message about how much the achievement is valued at the highest levels of government.
