- A protester stood on a chair mid-conference on September 18 and delivered an impassioned speech disrupting a tech and AI
- The activist warned that everyday communities bear the worst consequences of AI expansion while having no say in decisions that affect them
- Security escorted the protester out through the venue's corridors after the confrontational interruption was captured on video
A protester brought a tech and AI industry conference to a standstill on September 18 when she climbed onto a chair in the middle of a seated audience and launched into a pointed speech challenging the direction of artificial intelligence development.
The disruption, captured on video and shared on Facebook by the "Pull The Plug" campaign, shows the activist raising a series of urgent questions about AI safety, data centre expansion and public accountability before being escorted out by security through the building's corridors.
What the Protester Said
Speaking over the heads of conference delegates seated beneath dramatic blue and white stage lighting, the activist opened by questioning whether the event's stated purpose of benefiting people reflected reality on the ground.
She cited figures suggesting that roughly 500 operational data centres were pushing two thirds of one country toward drought conditions, and referenced a widely discussed incident involving AI company Hugging Face as evidence of reckless handling of powerful technology.
"People are afraid when we hear that AI has a 10% chance of killing us all within a decade," she said in a video shared by Pull The Plug pointing to what she described as a gap between industry confidence and public fear.
Her central argument was that local communities are the first to absorb the consequences of AI infrastructure while being the last consulted on its expansion. She challenged the conference audience directly, asking whether any of those present had ever been given a vote or referendum on AI policy decisions.
"Regulation doesn't please the shareholders. So of course you're not going to want to," she said, directing her frustration at what she characterised as a system designed to protect financial interests over public welfare.
She called for an immediate moratorium on new data centre construction and demanded that everyday people be given a meaningful voice in shaping AI policy, rather than leaving those decisions to what she described as Silicon Valley billionaires with no stake in local communities.
Conference Security Steps In
After delivering her speech, the protester was approached by security and guided out of the event space. The footage follows her through the venue's internal corridors as she continues to speak, maintaining her composure throughout the removal.
The video, branded with the Pull The Plug logo, spread rapidly online, drawing attention to questions about democratic oversight of emerging technology that have gained urgency as AI development accelerates globally.
