A Kenyan police officer reportedly lost his life after a stone was allegedly thrown at his vehicle during a predawn return journey from a political rally in Homa Bay County, according to a report shared by Nation on Facebook on August 20, 2026.

Police Constable Jim Richardson Onkundi, 36, was behind the wheel when the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, August 16. He and four colleagues had departed Chemelil Police Post in Muhoroni Subcounty, Kisumu County, at around 3am to provide security at the Linda Mwananchi rally held in Homa Bay.

The Journey That Turned Fatal

On the return trip, a projectile allegedly hurled at the vehicle reportedly struck Onkundi directly on the head. The blow reportedly caused him to lose consciousness instantly, and with no one at the wheel, the vehicle veered off the road and ploughed into a building before coming to a stop.

Onkundi died as a result of his injuries.

The other officers present in the vehicle were Senior Superintendent Fredrick Ombaka, Corporal Leonard Wanjala, Constable Geoffrey Kebenei and Constable Bernard Odundo. Details about the condition of the other occupants were not immediately available.

Officers on Duty When Tragedy Struck

The five-member team had been deployed in an official capacity, tasked with maintaining order at a public rally. Onkundi was performing his duties as the designated driver for the assignment when the incident allegedly unfolded.

The circumstances surrounding the throwing of the stone, including who was responsible and whether any arrests have since been made, had not been publicly confirmed at the time of the report.
