- Mercy Kanini, from Juja in Kiambu County, delivered five babies at Thika Level 5 Hospital on Monday, September 14, 2026
- The rare delivery was achieved through spontaneous vaginal birth, surprising medical staff and the family who had only expected four babies
- Four of the newborns developed severe complications linked to premature birth and very low birth weight, leaving the family grief-stricken
Mercy Kanini, a Kenyan mother from Juja in Kiambu County, is mourning the loss of four newborns after delivering quintuplets at Thika Level 5 Hospital on Monday, September 14, 2026.
The births, which comprised four girls and one boy, were achieved through spontaneous vaginal delivery, a medically remarkable outcome for a multiple birth of that scale. Prenatal scans had only indicated four babies, so the arrival of a fifth child came as a complete surprise during labour.
A Celebration Turned to Grief
What initially seemed like an extraordinary milestone for the family quickly turned into heartbreak. Within hours of delivery, all five newborns began showing severe complications associated with premature birth and critically low birth weight. Four of the babies did not survive.
Mercy and her husband, Evans Nyamhanga, are now navigating the painful contrast of welcoming a new child into the world while grieving four others. The couple's surviving newborn remains under care as the family comes to terms with the loss.
Medical staff at Thika Level 5 Hospital, along with relatives, friends and well-wishers, have rallied around the family during what has become an extraordinarily difficult period.
Rare Birth, Rare Loss
Quintuplet births are exceptionally uncommon and carry significant medical risks, particularly when the babies are born prematurely. Very low birth weight places newborns at heightened risk of respiratory distress, organ complications and other life-threatening conditions that are difficult to manage even in well-equipped medical settings.
The family continues to receive support and condolences from those close to them as they grieve privately.
